What a year… for everyone! If ever there was a time to hear God knocking, this year was the one. The Bible tells us that God is always ready to welcome us home. Home to Him and a relationship that surpasses all others. This is the season to open those bibles and read what the power of God has done through His Son Jesus Christ. Our light and our hope.
So, one of my very favorite Christmas songs goes; “Silent night, holy night. Son of God, oh, love’s pure light”. That’s love as a verb and a noun. God’s action in the person of Jesus Christ. The Word that came to dwell among us! (Read John 1:14) That love is a tangible thing that will conquer death. Amazing love, given through amazing Grace.
“”For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 NASB
Paul describes some gifts of the spirit in 1 Corinthians. “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:13 NASB
It’s the Christmas season. What is the message for us? What is our Hope? The Bible describes a couple in Matthew, not yet fully married, facing possible ridicule and divorce until an angel, sent by God, intervenes in a dream. GOD’S VOICE.. Wise me from afar travel to see a new born king. Not a king of wealth but one of hope. They are led by a light at night. GOD’S SIGN. They avoid returning to Herod, again through God’s voice. The couple are told to flee to another land to save their baby. GOD’S PLAN. How are you listening to God today? Do you see ways in which He touches your life? Can you hear His voice? Do you set aside your own ideas and will to allow for His sovereignty? His plans for you?
We face this broken world with very little armor of our own. But we receive great gifts from the Holy Spirit, through faith. At Christmas we should be reminded of God’s pure light. That light is lit with immeasurable hope and love. Armor indeed! Love is at the heart of what it means to believe. To rise above the wreckage with a partial view of heaven. To love with Gods huge love. To SEE love’s pure light. The gift of Christmas is love, or, God’s gift to us in His Son, Jesus Christ. That love is partially described by Paul;
“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NASB
We sing “Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace”… the face of God in a babe, with the purpose of bestowing undeserved merit, called grace. A babe whose purpose is to eventually, according to God’s prophecy through His chosen prophets, stretch out his hands under penalty of crude spikes also under the curse of cruxifixction. Punishment from a foolish world, while He takes on our sins to free us. He is the light that came to live in us so we might stretch out our will to Him and pick up our cross… we die to ourselves so His light shines in us with His righteousness. Lots of words that describe a selfless act. That’s why I chose to share the lyrics of Silent Night. Not so many words to describe divine love on a holy night. Christ the Savior is born.
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, oh, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Son of God, oh, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
